Well, folks, the 2020 winter athletics programme has officially been sent to the big scrapheap in the sky—victim of that pesky Covid-19 lockdown. With no fresh race-day snaps likely for a while, I’ve rummaged through the dusty archives and unearthed a few gems from the good old days.
Behold: the 2010 Le Gaye Rose Bowl races at Island Bay! Back when crowds were legal, hills felt taller, and shorts somehow seemed shorter. This opener of the season was a sealed handicap (translation: organised chaos) over a brisk 5km with a hill that laughed at your fitness tracker. It doubled as a selector for Shaw Baton teams—because nothing says “team spirit” like a lung-busting climb.
The day had it all: speedy kids, determined walkers, and the seniors and juniors battling it out in the main event. If memory serves (and let’s be honest, sometimes it doesn’t), Dave Hatfield still holds the course record. Either way, let’s just say he ran so fast his shadow needed a taxi to keep up.
