2024 Wellington Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs Harcourt Park Wed 22 May

Arriving at Harcourt Park I was surprised at how firm the course was. I was fully expecting some cut-up track given all the recent rain, but no it was actually in quite reasonable condition.

So here are my observations.

Back from some XC racing in Kenya, Max Doherty channelling his inner kamikaze, didn’t just take the lead from the starting gun; in the Boys U19 6k race. He practically waved at the competition as he scooted around the course unchallenged. Behind him, a pack of well-performed contenders tried to keep up, but it was like trying to chase a cheetah on roller skates.

Desmond Reddy and Callum Wos found themselves in the dwindling peloton, but as the race heated up, it was a showdown between them that would’ve made the most seasoned sprinter hold their breath. Wos known for leaving it all on the track, wasn’t about to let anyone outkick him that’s for sure.

Meanwhile Poppy Healy, in the Girls U19 4k race, and also just back from racing in Kenya, showcased her strength, fending off determined challengers like Jessica McKenzie, who threw everything she had into the race but couldn’t quite match Healey’s late surge.

Maia Holden, another Kenya returnee, rounded out the podium, proving that jet lag was no match for her determination.

In the Boys U16 event, Xavier James claimed victory in a nail-biter for second and third, with Hugo Jones and Alex MacBeth hot on his heels, finishing so close you’d think they were tied together.

Madison Wos dominated the Girls U16 3k race, leaving competitors like Juju Moorhead in her wake, who despite her efforts couldn’t quite catch up.

Then there’s Jacob Williams, who obliterated the Boys Year 9 3k field like a tornado in a teacup. Seriously, a 39-second winning gap?  That’s not a win, it’s a declaration of running dominance.

And finally, let's not forget Emma Lowden and Olivia McDowell, who battled it out at the front of the Girls Year 9 3k race, leaving poor Lucy Mabin trailing in their wake like a distant comet.

Now, there was an AWD race but I missed it.
