Well, this event was full of surprises – the kind where you wonder if you've accidentally turned up at the wrong show.

First shocker: nothing was the same as last year. The course had changed. The distances had changed. Even the start times had changed. And how did we find out? Oh, we didn’t – because it wasn’t online. Not on the College Sport website, not on the Athletics Wellington website. Nowhere. Nada. Zilch. The rotters.

This year’s course decided to skip the rugby field entirely (how rude), and instead of our familiar clockwise jaunt, we were sent anti-clockwise. A bold move, some might say. A betrayal, others might mutter.

Distance-wise, it was a buffet of kilometers:

·         The AWD athletes had a 2km scenic tour,

·         Year 9s were treated to 3km of winding joy,

·         The U16s upgraded to a 4km spin,

·         And the U20s had the full 5km extravaganza.

All this was achieved through a clever 1.5km core loop, plus a mix of bite-sized bonus loops tossed in for good measure. The course had more twists than a soap opera – delightful for spectators, a nightmare for photographers trying to get that perfect mid-stride shot.

The action kicked off at high noon (12:00pm for the less dramatic), with the AWD boys leading the charge. A minute later, the AWD girls followed, and from there it was a rolling start every 30 minutes – boys first, girls second, rinse and repeat, until the last herd bolted off at 1:30pm.

The weather? A delight – mostly clear skies. The ground? Mostly reasonable, though a few corners had that sneaky stickiness that likes to nibble at your shoes and test your dignity. Some might call it “technical terrain.” Others might just grumble and blame their shoelaces.

All in all, it was a day of surprises, loops, and a fair amount of “Wait, which way are we going again?” Cross-country at its finest.
