Post 2km and looking fresh for the Pelorus Trust 5km

Well it was a fine day but where was everybody?

There were no walkers apart from Ray Marten and no Will Critchlow.

I can only presume that people are resting up in advance or other events or were scared away by the prospect of seeing Daryl wearing his Santa hat.

Well as it turned out Daryl wore his red beret so the Santa hat will have to wait until "that time".

Plenty of red was being worn in keeping with the Run in Red theme for the Save the Children charity run that was embedded in the 5km. Those red Scottish Akaroa Relay T-Shirts came in handy after all.

On the racing side Amanda Broughton cleaned up with a decisive 18.41 in the women's grade to notch up her first win since 2016.

Back further in second was Kristen Dovey who clocked 20.23 for her first outing in this race.
Young Hannah Molloy from Upper Hutt picked up third place with 21.10 which is not too far off her PB of 21.10 set a year ago. I presume that Hannah is related to Finn?

There was a dead heat in the men’s race with Kristian Day and Ben Twyman doing the course in 15.37.

The official time gave Kristian the split-second win but I am not so sure about that Daryl.

Ben’s time was pretty much equal to his PB for the waterfront while Kristian’s time is his best for the two times he has started.

Within spitting distance behind these two was sub-2.30-marathoner Mark Moore who ran 15.44. This time is a PB for Mark by a goodly margin and it is going to be interesting to see what he can do over the next year or so.

Women
18.41 Amanda Broughton
20.23 Kristin Dovey
21.10 Hannah Molloy

Men
15.37  Kristian Day
15.37  Ben Twyman
15.44  Mark Moore

A handful of children did the 2km charity run option and it would seem a couple of them are entered for the 5km at this Sunday’s Pelorus Trust races in Petone. It’s going to rain kids.

Observations

Spotted having a good time at the St Johns Bar was triathlete Cameron Goldsmid. He promised me twice in the space of ninety minutes that he would come along to 5km next week’s 5km. He had better because if he doesn’t I know where he lives.

Mrs Jones was on the rego counter and did some pacing. She did the usual complaining to about how awful my photos of her were. I get this all the time but she also told me that she had been replaced by a piece of cardboard. I have no idea what that means but what an outrage. Why would anybody think that a piece of cardboard could replace Mrs J? What have you been doing Daryl?

2018 Central Regional League T&F Meeting Round 3 Newtown Park Sat 17 Nov

Team points

It was a busy day at the park for round 3 of the Central Regional League competition. Starting with the Men’s Hammer at 11.00am a full programme was offered which meant something for everybody.

There was good attendance from the other athletic centres in the region with big cohorts of college age competitors eyeing up the NZSSAA champs in early December.

Strangely master’s grade athletes seemed to be thin on the ground considering that the NI Masters Champs will be at Newtown this coming weekend. There could be reasons for this of course and you are welcome to email them to me.
.
A sparkle was added to proceedings with Shaka Sola on roving microphone duties giving facts and updates on the various competitions particularly the field events and more particularly throwing events. Shaka injected some interesting music choices into his broadcasts which is perfectly consistent with his wicked sense of humour and mischievous nature. Athletics Wellington should use Shaka more often in a field announcer role not only to brighten things up but to highlight when tight competition and good performances are taking place.

And talking about good performances, there were doubtless many but I will just mention a couple. In the men’s long jump, Jordan Peters the current national champion got out to 7.21 metres which I believe is roughly what he wanted to do on this trip to Wellington.

Over at the pole vault site “serial jumper” Sean Pay catapulted himself over the bar set at 3.80m which I am sure is a PB for him. Getting to 4.00m was out of reach today but who knows what he can get to next time. And to show how things can change, last week Sean got to 1.93m at the high jump but couldn’t pull off a 1.97m.  On Saturday he nailed the height so anything is possible on the right day.

There were big fields in the 1500m, 800m and 3000m/5000m races no doubt because of the schools track and field thingy coming up in early December. Interestingly of the 4 who opted for the longer 5000m option, three were 15yo or younger.
