Cool and calm – these are just about perfect racing
conditions for Wellington, and an excuse to put the foot down. The flotilla of dragon boats and racing skiffs
on the water were certainly doing that with conditions so good.
Caroline Mellsop was the first female across Daryl’s finish
line clocking 20.44 and a PB. This is Caroline’s first win in this event so
congratulations to her.
Back further in 2nd place was Christina Totina who
ran 21.09. This was her 3rd race and her third 2nd
placing, but the time was unfortunately her slowest so far. But there is always
next week.
Sarah Fountain a regular sight at this event was third in
21.37, which is not a PB but it is the best so far for 2018. Sarah first ran this
event back in 2014 so she will know when she is having a good day and when she
is not.
In the men’s grade it was course record holder Daniel Jones
all the way. His time of 15.21 indicates a solid run which indicates that Dan
is fighting fit.
In 2nd place was Caversham Club (Dunedin) newcomer Matthew
Maloney who ran 15.45. If Mr Maloney’s presence is more than a pass -through-town
then have we got a deal for him.
The same goes for first timer Noel Guy who ran 17.10 for 3rd
and had enough of a gap to keep clear of the fast finishing Will Critchlow who
on the finishing straight was probably more worried about Tim Judge who was trying
to steal his thunder.
As we go to air we know who the new leader of the National
party is but we still don’t know whether Dan
Hunt has been able to get Will to sign.
