And so, we
find ourselves standing at the crossroads of time, gazing upon the results of
the much-anticipated third iteration of the Waterfront 5km race. The year is
3AD, and yes, it’s true—this race, this iconic event, continues under the
stewardship of the same trusted hands, in Corporal Smith and his elves. Thus a tradition persists, unwavering.
Conditions
today? Cooler than the previous two races, with a biting southerly wind
sweeping across the waterfront, adding an extra layer of challenge to the
already fierce competition. But despite the wind’s chill, the spirit of the
runners burned brightly, as the race saw 59 finishers—though only one brave
walker among them.
In a
stunning twist of fate, Tom Strawbridge (Vic Uni) and Max Poland (Trentham
United) dead-heated
at 16:16. If the timing is accurate, this remarkable outcome may well be a
first for the Waterfront 5km. But let’s not forget—Tom has already cemented his
legacy, claiming his third consecutive victory in this race. He now holds the
coveted trifecta, a feat few could ever dream of.
Behind them,
in third place, was Daniel Stansfield, crossing the line in a commendable
16:38.
On the
women’s side, Bex Hutchinson claimed victory with an impressive 19:03, followed
closely by Madison Wos at 19:44. But it was the lesser-known Aurlie Brevetti
who took third in this category, clocking in at 20:12. A name that may not be
familiar to many, but one that certainly made an impact today.
The sub-19
minute time for the women still eludes us, but make no mistake—it will come.
With a little luck from the weather gods, we will witness that elusive time
shattered shortly.
And with
that, we close another chapter in this ongoing saga. Unfortunately, there are
no photos to share this time—I wasn’t there to capture the magic. But rest
assured, the legend of today’s race will live on, told in the echoes of those
who ran.
