2018 Wellington Track & Field Meet Newtown Park Sat 10 Nov

Today’s A-Programme started 2 hours later than normal to dovetail into the Agency Group 10km races.

Over at the throwing area Sir Peter Jack held court while the shot-put competition progressed. His lordship sat in his portable throne frequently passing comment on the worthiness or otherwise of the efforts of his Kiwi Athletic club-mates, and others.

On the track there were reasonable entries in the various races which I suspect has a lot to do with the NZ Secondary Schools T&F champs coming up in a few weeks. This and the fact there will be a regional league meeting at Newtown Park next Saturday is enough to bring them out.

The 800m was especially popular with 4 heats required. Neville Paul had a group of Wellington College kids in this event including the Martin brothers who both won their heats. 

The 3000m by contrast only had two finishers, Jim Jones and Sam Williams. This is a little surprising since this distance is the longest track event at the secondary schools and is generally quite popular with kids with more endurance than speed.

Sean Pay got to 1.92m at the high jump but couldn’t nail the 1.97m height today. I understand his best is just over 2.00m so it all seems to be working at this stage of the season.

2018 Scottish Waterfront 5k Race Wellington Tue 6 Nov

The spring northerly was a nuisance 

Results

Another crappy chilly and windy day on the waterfront which I thought might keep people away. 

But no, about 156 turned up which proves that Wellingtonians are a hardy bunch. 

On the bright side the forecast for next Tuesday seems to be better although given the weather we are getting it could turn out to be fake news.

The first two runners through Daryl’s five eyes system were Levi Timar and Dan Jones both with a time of 15.47. Levi was slightly ahead of Dan at the finish but with a big 10k track race coming up this Saturday they weren’t really pushing it. It was probably just a tempo run.

Third was Paul Barwick in 16.51 who was just a couple of seconds off his best time for this course.

Will Critchlow on the comeback trail just fended off Trentham United junior Jonah Seeds, but there was a mighty finish-line battle between Welsh newcomer Twm (Tom in Welsh) Morgan and Josh Jordan who both got a time of 17.50.  I can’t wait for next week to see what might happen between the nipper and the fell runner.   

The experienced Natalie Hardaker was the first woman home in 19.19 which is a good time considering the conditions. 

Second was Kate Slater in 19.41 her first sub-20 and a hefty PB to boot. This was probably one of the best runs of the day.  

In third place was Emma Bassett in 20.52.

Observations:

There was no Sue Cuthbertson today. Daryl will need to investigate.

Daryl’s five eyes system was nearly blown over by a gust of wind, which is why he parked his car on the northern side of the finish line as wind protection.
