At last a decent weather day for the penultimate Waterfront 5km for 20/21, and didn’t it show in the results.
Zillions of PB’s and SPB’s proves that good times are possible when there is no need to battle into pesky northerly or southerly winds. Even Dan Jones who would be well used to training and racing in Wellingtons predominant windy conditions clocked in first with an extremely fast 15.07. And this achieved despite a near head-on collision with another at the northern end of the apartment leg.
Storming home in 2nd was Ryan Hunt who is really coming into his own scored 16.02, so well within striking a sub-16 minute ending which must come his way eventually.
Matt Moloney ran in 3rd with 16.06 which is not his best but still pretty good going. I am waiting for Matt to run a boomer half marathon which I know he is well capable of.
I will also mention Max Poland who ran in 4th but he wasn't 4th when I saw him at everybody's favourite fishing spot so must have put the hammer down over the last 800m or so. His time of 15.49 is his 2nd best time on this course and the quickest he has run for his last 9 starts.
But where is his nemesis, Josh Jordan?
Today’s waterfront queen representing the sizeable contingent of women’s runners participating was Ali Campbell. This was her third ever race on the course and today’s time of 18.48 got her under the magic 19-minute mark which was a PB to boot. Way to go Ali!
Sophie Whelan was a long way back behind Ali but she picked up the 2nd spot with 20.38 and her 2nd best time ever. Things are looking up Sophie.
In third place for the bronze was Sarah Unwin who ran a PB of 20.53 which was streets ahead of her previous best time. Pushing her and just 1 second behind in 20.54 was Kasey MacKinnon who grabbed 4th with this outstanding PB.
See what I was saying about PB’s galore?
So next week is the final race for this 20/21 season and golly gosh it will be a free one. But will there be cake?
