Final Points

There is nothing like the McEvedy in the whole of New Zealand athletics or might I suggest for any high school sporting event. Once a year four boys schools come together to battle it out for the coveted McEvedy Shield. This is a competition that has been going since 1922 and in 2018 shows no signs of becoming anything less than the rowdy event that it is. I call it the power and the passion.

There are bits to the event build up that we probably don't get to see. These are the private messages between the schools that manifest itself in wall art, texted challenges and of course sophisticated social messages. The challenges are planned and laid down early. Look at this

In 2017 Wellington College won the McEvedy from St Patrick's Kilbirnie (Town) by a reasonable margin. WC are of course a big school much larger than any of the other 3 colleges. But that does not seem to make much of a difference if you are able to muster a team that has depth across both track and field events. And this is important because points are scored by the first 4 in each event. 

This is what Mark Tinkle the Wellington College McEvedy Team Manager had to say going into the event.

After Round 1 the early scoring put Wellington College ahead of St Pat's Town but within reach. As the points were updated to take account of subsequent rounds it became clear that it would becoming increasingly difficult for the other schools to pull back WC, and it would be an upset if that occurred.   

The final score including the results of the 4x100 relays, the final event for the day is as follows:

Javelin – New record 65.50m, Cam Robinson (WC) – old record 63.48m

There are a couple of things to note about the record breaking performances.  The 1.92m high jump by Sautia Misa in the Under 15 grade was higher than the jumps achieved by contestants in the Under 16 (including the new record height) and Open grades.

The fine performance by Matthew Sutcliffe in the Open 1500 was mostly a solo effort mainly because all of the other competitors in the field , including Dylan Lynch the WC team captain, had raced the 3000m a few hours earlier and were possibly still feeling the effects.

The weight of the javelin used for the Open grade is 700g. Cam Robinson’s (WC) best throw with this weight is 69.58m which he achieved in Hastings in December to become the National Secondary Schools Senior Boys javelin Champion. 

His brother Tim who also competed at McEvedy is the current junior champion.
