2018 Scottish Waterfront 5k Race Wellington Tue 13 Mar

Results

There was some wind to contend with today and judging by the comments from returning runners it did impact on times.

All timing tonight was hand held as the Five Eyes system was not used because some of the ankle chips needed to make the thing work were missing following the Hutt 5Km Fun Run.

Tonight’s star performance came from Nicola Hankinson in the women’s grade who ran 19.56 to become the first woman home.

This was her first race since December when she ran 20.13 but he has come back with a vengeance to break the magic 20 minute mark and secure a PB.  Well done Nicola, especially since there was wind out on the course to contend with.
Race regular Caroline Mellsop was 2nd in 20.21 which is a significant PB

Not far behind Caroline in 20.24 was Leigh-Anne Joyce who claimed 3rd place and a PB to boot.

With Caroline and Leigh-Anne I can see that the magic 20 minutes is waiting to be broken, so keep it up ladies.

In the men’s grade course record holder Dan Jones skipped home in first place in 15.23 which makes this his fourth consecutive sub-16.  You should do the 10k track race coming up at Newtown Park this weekend Dan.

Second home was Matthew Maloney.  His time of 16.23 gave him 2nd place the same spot he claimed two weeks ago when he ran a PB of 15.45. Once again the wind may have had some influence on his time, or he could have just had a bad day.

Third across the line was Angus Wemyss from Nelson and fresh from the NZ National Athletics Champs held in Hamilton over the weekend.

A newcomer to the waterfront Daryl clocked Angus at 16.47 which is his initial PB for the course.

Meanwhile Dan Hunt from Vic Uni failed in his quest this week at least.  He had planned to run 17 minutes but it would be achieved by doing intervals.

This means running at a certain speed (fast) for a time and then slowing for a time (recovery).  This is then repeated and when done as part of a long term programme undertaken over time gives a training effect.  That's the rough theory anyway.

The alternative to intervals is urban fartlek which is a lot more fun.

Anyway Dan only clocked 17.28 which was enough to shut out the fast finishing Will Critchlow who must have been scratching his head at Dan's strange surging moves.
